What the Level 3 programme demands — and delivers
The Level 3 Pre-Tertiary programme is Aucklandcore's most demanding academic offering. It is designed for Year 13 students and adult learners preparing for university entry who want to arrive already familiar with the cognitive and organisational demands of degree-level study. The programme requires three major essays per term (each between 2,000 and 2,500 words), two structured seminars in which students lead discussion rather than merely participate, and an externally assessed research portfolio reviewed by a panel of practising academics from Wellington and Auckland. Faculty feedback at this level is detailed and does not default to encouragement — it identifies structural weaknesses, argument failures, and evidence gaps, and it expects revision within a set timeframe.
The limits of what Level 3 can guarantee
Completing the Level 3 Pre-Tertiary programme does not guarantee university admission — that decision rests with the institution's own admissions process, which considers NCEA results, interviews, and other factors outside our control. What we can guarantee is that students who complete the programme and engage seriously with the feedback will be substantially better prepared than students who have not had this experience. We also cannot guarantee a specific grade improvement in school subjects — our programme is separate from the school curriculum, and outcomes depend on how consistently each student applies the skills developed here to their wider academic work.
What the Level 3 programme includes
Two faculty-led seminars
Students lead discussion in at least one of the two seminars, requiring advance preparation of a five-to-ten minute spoken contribution and written questions for peers.
Externally assessed research portfolio
A curated portfolio of three to five short research pieces, assessed by an external panel of academics and returned with written evaluations — not numerical grades.
