For Year 12 learners who need to move beyond basic structure into the more demanding territory of multi-source research, counter-argument, and timed academic writing.
The competencies the Level 2 programme develops
At Level 2, students are expected to move beyond single-source analysis into the more complex work of synthesising multiple texts and handling disagreement between sources. The programme covers multi-source research essays of 1,000 to 1,500 words, the construction and rebuttal of counter-arguments, timed writing workshops that replicate examination conditions, and an introduction to academic citation conventions used in New Zealand universities. The programme also includes two structured seminars, each requiring a five-minute spoken contribution prepared in advance. By the programme's end, students can produce a coherent, well-evidenced argument under time pressure — a skill that translates directly into examination performance.
Who this programme is for — and who should wait
The Level 2 Academic Skills programme assumes students have already developed basic paragraph structure and can write a coherent single-source analysis. Students who have completed the Level 1 Foundation programme are well prepared; students entering from standard school English are assessed on a writing sample submitted during the admissions process. The programme is not recommended for students who are still consolidating sentence-level mechanics — that work belongs in Level 1. We will tell you honestly during admissions if Level 2 is not the right starting point. Beginning at the wrong level does not accelerate progress; it manufactures frustration.
I had always been told I was a good writer. Level 2 showed me how much of that was fluency rather than rigour. The timed essay workshops were uncomfortable at first — producing 1,200 words in 80 minutes with sources in front of you requires a completely different skill set. By the end of the programme I was doing it without anxiety. That confidence carried directly into my NCEA Level 2 exams.
